Posing instead of acting?

G8 posing at the beach - Photo: Johannes Koblenz

Who accuses this dashing Gang of Eight? Well, obviously many people these days.

If you are aware of the vast suffering beyond the protective fence around “The First World”, built on the solid base of ignorance and self-satisfaction, you may curse the powers in charge. But who are the powers in charge? Seven boys and a girl playing with others people lives? Probably not, the term “string puppet” comes to my mind, but well, not a quite recent notice I guess. No, I don’t claim the G8 heads are not responsible. They are obviously successful politicians, good liars thus, promising a better world and taking money for not being able or willing to live up to the expectations. But they are not the only ones to blame. Affiliated groups and lobbies are in fact the new “demo” in democracy. So there is always often a puppeteer behind the puppeteer who you won’t notice at first glance. This isn’t about conspiracy theories – it’s about facts.

However there are not only the lobbies acting for profit, but also opposing forces, we call them NGOs, lobbies acting for people. Oxfam is one of them, trying to make the G8 – and especially Angela Merkel as the chairwoman of this years summit – keep the promises to the poor of the world. One project by Oxfam are the “Big Heads” (see picture above) – oversized paper-mâché heads personating Shinzō Abe, Anthony C. L. “Tony” Blair, George W. Bush, Stephen J. Harper, Angela D. Merkel, Romano Prodi, Wladimir W. Putin and Nicolas Sarkozy. (Also check out our little posers here and here...)

The aim of the project is to single out the problems the G8-summit is expected to solve, well, let’s stay realistic, problems which should be discussed… As I said before, the eight heads of state might not be the only ones to blame for a tortured world, but they are the faces we are associating the power to change many things.

The question is, are they really going to debate or is all just a big show at the seaside, costing a hundred million euros?

Oxfam representatives and other experts take part at the G8-alternative-summit, dealing with subjects as world trade and health care systems. As well supported by experts Oxfam will give statements to the outcome of the G8-negotiations in the G8-presscenter in Kühlungsborn. Here is Oxfams G8-presskit (German) containing the demands on the G8-summit.

Let there be advancement.
