cat and mouse-clash between police and radicals

Cat and mouse Nobody really had an idea about what happened. Fact is, it was raining stones, sticks and tear gas, a never ending hurdle-race.G8? Africa? Never mind, there are other things going on here. It seems this was all about a test of strength: Anarchists against the Police and vice versa. After all, the demonstration was going on well. Our interviewers were all peaceful, concerned, critical individuals and groups who were building the G8 resistance. They had many interesting visual articulations, such as funny images, costumes and logos, which expressed their non-violent point of view about regional, national or more

Tuniques blanches contre tuniques noires

From Hamburg to Rostock

My alarm clock was set to go off at 6:30, but I overslept. Luckily, it comes back on in regular intervals a good long while, and just after seven I finally heard it. I hadn’t packed anything the night before. The last week had been stressful for me, between working, looking after my son, and seeing off my brother, who had been staying with me in Hamburg the last two weeks. I scrambled to get packed and ready: we were set to meet at eight, and I needed at least 20 minutes to get to the main more

They Didn’t Throw Rocks

3.jpg There were thousands today who didn’t burn cars. Some 80,000, they say. But let me name you three: Lisa, Yanis and Anka. Lisa, Yanis and Anka. Three girls living in Copenhagen jumped on a bus today, one of the thirteen leaving Denmark this morning for the international demonstration against the G8 summit in Rostock. The trip was supposed to last less than four hours. The bus got searched at the border, they had to wait there for an extra three hours, for apparently no reason. But they finally made it in time. Lisa’s from Sweden, Yanis more

"Not against, but different": Impressions of Saturday's Demo

samara_pic_ladies.jpg At 1pm, faces were smiling, painted and singing. The colors of peace were everywhere, in balloons, posters and towering puppets. We walked through the old town, towards the demonstration, with two sisters. Both in their '70s, they talked of surviving WWII, of the fall of the Wall. The air is full of the same need for change, they said, just as it was in 1989. They told of how difficult it had been to express their idealism, how even their church group has been scorned by the ever-watching eye of the GDR. more

“Let Them Meet on the Moon”: Locals Against The Fence

zaun.jpg Since "The Fence" went up around Heiligendamm this winter, tourists and locals have been angry. It reminds them of the Cold War. Two and half meters-high, twelve kilometers long, equipped with cameras, patrolled by police dogs, and topped with ultra-sharp iron wire. "It’s a pity, but it has to be like this," said Christa Heese, a 58-year Heiligendamm old tourist in, one of the last tourists to stay in the region's luxury hotels before preparations for the G8 began. "Security may cost something.” Mrs. Heese said she's afraid of violent protesters, like the G8 protests more

Don't Make Us Use This: Greenpeace Rebuilds Noah's Ark

Noah’s Ark, 21st century style. (Photo: Greenpeace) On May 31, Greenpeace unveiled a modern version of Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat. German and Turkish builders spent most of the month of May constructing the 10 x 4 x 4-meter (32 x 13 x 13-foot) wooden boat, using horses to schlepp materials 2,500 meters up the mountain, to the place where the biblical ark is said to have come to rest after floods subsided. The timing of the ark's construction — just a week before G8 leaders more
